When I decided to take this trip and began working on my budget, I knew I didn’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe just for a week of travel. Merino wool, in particular, is an investment — and while it’s perfect for travel, it’s also something that made sense for my everyday life. Since my wardrobe needed updating anyway, I decided to be thoughtful about it, choosing pieces that would work well for both.
Recently, I came across a simple method of using four layers: base, mid, top, and outer. It fits perfectly with the kind of wardrobe I’m building — practical, flexible, and designed to make life (and travel) easier, not harder.
Here’s how I’m using it:
1. Base Layer: Pants and Tank Tops
The base layer is all about comfort and versatility. I’m bringing ankle-length pants and tank tops that can be worn on their own when it’s warm or layered easily when it’s cooler.
2. Mid Layer: Lightweight, Long-Sleeve Shirts
For the mid layer, I’m packing lightweight three-quarter sleeve tops. They’re easy to layer, comfortable for different temperatures, and don’t take up much room in my bag.
3. Top Layer: Cardigans, Hoodies, and Sweaters
This layer adds warmth when needed. A lightweight cardigan is easy to slip over a tank or long-sleeve top and is perfect for cooler mornings and evenings. Hoodies are great for extra warmth when needed.
4. Outer Layer: Coats
The outer layer is focused on protection. I’m bringing a longer, lightweight raincoat that folds easily but still gives good coverage for rain and wind.
Why the Four-Layer Method Works
Instead of packing for one specific forecast, this method keeps you ready for different situations:
• Warm day? Base and mid layers.
• Cooler morning or evening? Add the top layer.
• Rain or wind? Pull on the coat.
Because I’ve been building my new everyday Merino wardrobe around practical, flexible pieces, this method fits naturally into the way I was already planning to pack.
If you’re looking for a way to pack smarter for your next trip, starting with these four layers is a great place to begin.
Wool& also just launched a new Facebook group called wool&travel, which focuses on packing, travel tips, and building a wardrobe that works wherever you’re headed.
Whether you’re planning a big trip or updating your everyday wardrobe, it’s worth investing in pieces that work harder, last longer, and make life simpler — wherever you go.
