GOING CARRY-ON ONLY: A PLUS SIZE TRAVELER’S HONEST TAKE

GOING CARRY-ON ONLY: A PLUS SIZE TRAVELER’S HONEST TAKE

Going carry-on only to France was my goal. I came at it from every angle. And it proved it isn’t going to work for this trip.

The Strategies
Bought the Solgaard carry-on specifically for this trip
Started my merino wool journey because it’s lightweight, packable, and wearable multiple times between washes
Swapped liquid toiletries for solid bars and individual soft-pack pouches
Planned outfits using a 12-piece method to minimize “what if” packing
My travel day outfit will pull triple duty as my airport outfit, my train to Paris, and my flight home
Did a full test pack run with various combinations of the Solgaard insert, packing cubes and vacuum bags
That’s how I knew it wasn’t going to work.

The Part Nobody Talks About
When people say carry-on only, the advice assumes a certain amount of space per item of clothing — and that assumption is not built around plus size garments. A size 2X dress is not the same volume as a size 6 dress. Leggings at a larger size are heavier and thicker. Even a casual tee takes up meaningfully more space.

Plus size clothing takes up more space. Period.

And then there’s the international carry-on reality. Air France’s carry-on allowances are significantly stricter than domestic carriers. I originally thought my business class ticket granted me two carry-ons but unfortunately, when flying out of the US, TSA only allows one.

The Double Packing Problem
I’m essentially taking two trips. The first part being Camp Chateau, and then three nights in Paris before my return home. Those are not the same packing list. I have a little overlap but not much. Camp calls for leggings, tees, casual dresses, and one nicer dress for our final night photo. Paris calls for a completely different vibe.

The Biaggi Pivot
My original plan had included bringing an empty Biaggi folding suitcase to fill on the way home with clothes and souvenirs.

It is now about one-third full with overflow. The non-essentials, things I could survive losing if the bag gets lost or things that can easily be replaced.

It will be checked, and I’m flying business class, which significantly reduces the risk. But I’ve still decided to be strategic about what goes in it. Everything I truly need is in my carry-on.

My Honest Verdict
Carry-on only is definitely worth it when you can make it work. Unfortunately it’s not going to work for this trip.

How have you navigated carry-on only as a plus size traveler?
